This was our third well, which went into operation on December 10, 2018. This bottle is part of a well serving the 1,212 people living in the Sampina community in northwestern Ghana, located right next to the village’s CHPS health clinic, where access to clean water is vital for the medical staff assisting women in childbirth. Previously, the nearest water source was several kilometers away at the Volta River, where malaria-carrying mosquitoes and river blindness are common.
After a full day of drilling, we finally struck water right beside the health clinic serving Sampina and its neighboring villages. This marked a joyful end to the dangers of trekking through the tall elephant grass to the pond two kilometers away to fetch water.
The village of Sampina welcomed us with heartfelt dances and rituals.
